Our Story

A practice built around staying close to home

Craig P. Bushong, MD Professional LLC is a solo psychiatric practice with offices in Aspen and Carbondale. It exists because families in the Roaring Fork Valley should not have to leave the valley for psychiatric care.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide transformative local mental health care that is aligned to the individual, helping to find hope for a better future.

Our Vision

We envision a world bountiful in happiness, creativity, and well-being, free of needless mental suffering.

Why We Are Here

Care that does not require a day of driving

For a long time, a family in the valley needing psychiatric care for a child had two choices: a long drive, or nothing.

Denver is four hours away in good weather. Grand Junction is closer, but still a day gone — a day off work, a day out of school, and a journey to repeat every time an appointment is due. Plenty of families simply did without, or stopped going after the first few visits.

Dr. Bushong is the only Board Certified Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatrist practicing within 30 miles of Aspen, Basalt or Glenwood Springs. Two offices, thirty minutes apart, mean that care can be a regular part of a family's week rather than an expedition.

A misty autumn meadow of golden grass below spruce and yellow aspens, with mountains in cloud beyond.

How Care Is Delivered

One physician, the whole person, unhurried

This is a solo practice on purpose. You see the same doctor each time, and he knows your history without reading it back to you.

Care means treating the whole person rather than a symptom list: how you sleep, how you eat, what school or work is like, who is at home, what has already been tried. First appointments are long because that conversation takes time, and because nothing sensible gets decided in fifteen minutes.

Dr. Bushong offers psychotherapy and medication management — the careful use of prescribed medicine, reviewed with you over time. Many people have both. Some have neither for long. What happens next is a decision you make together, in plain language, with the reasoning explained.

Our Values

What the practice holds to

Six commitments, each one sentence long, because a value that needs a paragraph is not a value.

Care

Our guiding principle is compassion. You are a person in a difficult stretch, not a case to be processed.

Integrity

We are aware that happiness takes work. We say what we can help with, and what we cannot.

Accessibility

Anyone is welcome, as healthcare must be reasonably priced. If cost is a barrier, ask us.

Community

At our core we are a practice focused on the community. Our home and source of inspiration is Colorado.

Innovation

We keep up with current research and scientifically supported treatments, and explain the options in plain words.

Adaptability

There are several kinds of therapy. We adapt to the person in the room rather than the other way round.

Beyond The Office

Part of the valley, not visiting it

The practice is local in the ordinary sense: this is where Dr. Bushong lives and works.

Patients come from Aspen, Snowmass Village, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, Basalt and El Jebel, and travel in from Vail, Avon and Grand Junction.

It also means the practice knows what a season here does to a schedule. Appointments are booked around work, school and the weather, at whichever office is easier to reach.

Dr. Bushong is a Board Certified Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatrist and Psychopharmacologist. His training and credentials are set out on the About page.

Start where you are

You do not need to know what you need. Book a first appointment at either office, or send a short message and we will take it from there.
